CSKA Moscow – Leverkusen
Over the weekend we bagged a tasty 3/3, and we’ll look to continue that form in the Champions League. In an early UCL game Tuesday, struggling CSKA Moscow takes on Bayer Leverkusen. CSKA has struggled recently, as their midfield has been hit by scandals and injuries. Leverkusen is in a prime position to take three points from Luzhniki.
CSKA gaffer Leonid Slutsky’s had to cope without two of his core players in the midfield. By many accounts the best player in the whole Russian league, Roman Eremenko got suspended on a cocaine charge. Eremenko was caught using cocaine in a drug test after their previous clash against Leverkusen. Russian media speculated for nearly two months before UEFA finally came out with cocaine found in Eremenko’s system. The star-man got banned for two years, but CSKA and Eremenko have filed a protest against the decision.
Missing Eremenko isn’t the only problem for Slutsky. Alan Dzagoev is nursing a leg injury, and after a long lay-off will be facing a fitness test just hours before the kickoff. We’re likely to see Dzagoev come off the bench if he’s fit at all.
Leverkusen might’ve already had its trip to Moscow in mind when they fell to RB Leipzig at home 2-3 to end their winning streak. Leverkusen are in decent health, though missing a few players, none of them compares to the importance of CSKA’s absentees.
